F.A.Q
Garden Buildings Direct has more than just traditional garden sheds on offer. We understand that our customers want more out of garden buildings than just storage. A quality garden room is an extension of your house, serving all the functions that any interior room would. It is especially important now – considering how we’re all spending a lot more time at home – to ask how you can make the most of your outdoor space.
Solid Construction
Our buildings are manufactured by skilled craftsmen with the outstanding experience needed to build robust and superior-strength shed products to withstand the UK’s most extreme weather conditions. Our garden offices are designed with structural strength in mind, from the base to the cladding, so you can be safe in the knowledge your building will last.
All of our wooden garden rooms are built to the highest standards of quality to make sure you have a comfortable space for years to come. Each is built with solid timber, fitted together with strong, weather-resistant tongue and groove cladding to make sure your garden office withstands the worst the British weather can throw at it. You also have the option for pressure treated timber, which will extend the lifespan of your building and reduce the need for wood treatments.
A Flexible Space
We believe a garden office is whatever you make it, which is why we provide a solid blank slate for you to decorate with your preferences. A quality garden room can act as a home studio for creatives, an office space for freelancing professionals, or a room to entertain guests. Moving your office space outside your home allows you to better separate your work and home life and approach your passions with the attention and professionalism they deserve.
Beyond the function of the garden room as an office or studio space, garden rooms offer the everyday benefit of expanding your storage space. While some of our wooden and metal sheds are built with storage in mind, a garden room can offer space to store garden furniture or tools for the winter and still have enough space for you to pursue your passions.
If you’re self-employed or have a creative hobby that’s taking up too much room in your house, a garden office might just be the solution for you. Garden Buildings Direct is an industry leader in bespoke designed garden offices and other outdoor rooms. Our stylish garden offices offer you the space and the privacy to continue your work or explore your passions in comfort all year round.
A Wide Range Of Features
When selecting your garden room, you’ll have a range of options to choose from to make it ideally suited to your needs. These range from windows, floors and doors in different styles, and wall and window thicknesses. These options allow you to set up your office to be warm and comfortable all year round, or bright and breezy during summer usage.
When crafting our wooden garden shed designs, we always take into consideration our customers’ differing tastes and styles. For that reason, we offer both traditional apex shed roof designs and more contemporary pent roofs, as well as other unique design options.
Planning Your Garden Office
Before making your decision, there are a few things to bear in mind. Firstly, you may need planning permission to construct an outbuilding on your property. This will depend on local councils and neighbourhood policies, as well as the response of your immediate neighbours. Investigate your planning permission issues with the relevant authorities, or speak to a member of our customer team if you’d like some guidance.
Secondly, think about how much space you have to dedicate to the garden room. Bear in mind not only how much space you need for the building itself, but also for the concrete base it must be constructed on. Think also about access points to your garden from the road, and whether there is anything that could prevent large boxes and building supplies being delivered.
Another thing to consider is what you want to use your garden room for. As mentioned previously, a garden office is a versatile outdoor building which can suit a variety of needs, but depending on what you’ll be doing in the room you may need to consider different infrastructure options. For example, will you require a power source in your garden office? Will it require soundproofing or insulation? At what times of day do you intend to be working in the office, and therefore which direction should your door or windows be facing?

Garden buildings do not require planning permission, if they fall within permitted development guidelines. To classify as an ‘outbuilding’ under permitted development rules, it must not contain sleeping accommodation and must be single storey with a maximum eaves height of 2.5m. There are a few other restrictions listed below.
MAXIMUM HEIGHT: As mentioned above the eaves height would be limited to 2.5m. The maximum overall height depends on the roof shape – four meters for a dual pitch and three meters for any other type. However, if the building is within two meters of a boundary, the overall maximum height is restricted to 2.5m.
FOOTPRINT: Have you or any previous owners extended the house since 1948? If so, these extensions will eat up your permitted development allowance. Overall, you are not allowed to build on more than half the land associated with the house without full planning permission.
LOCATION: It must not be located forward of the main front wall of the original house. The original house means as it was first built or as it stood on 1 July 1948.
No verandas, balconies would be allowed without planning permission and raised decking should be no higher than 300mm.
